More than a year has passed since the disappearance of Brigadier General Jonathan Carleton after his capture by the Seneca. When General George Washington posts Elizabeth Howard to New York City to spy on the British, she finds it increasingly difficult to resist the courtship of handsome, young Doctor Pieter Vander Groot while she anxiously awaits news of Carleton’s fate.

Unknown to her, Carleton, now the Shawnee Ohio Territory. At the same time it requires every ounce of the canny diplomacy he possesses to steer a prudent course between the thinly veiled malice of the shaman Wolfslayer and the unconcealed passion of the beautiful widow Blue Sky.

In a stinging blow that places the rebels’ hopes in jeopardy, Washington’s outnumbered army is badly mauled at Brooklyn Heights. Briefly captured by the British, then sucked into the brutal fight, Elizabeth narrowly escapes with her life. By a miracle, the Continentals escape back across the East River to tenuous safety on Manhattan. And when Colonel Charles Andrews arrives from Pennsylvania with tales of a blond-haired Shawnee war chief named White Eagle, Elizabeth eagerly accompanies him on a perilous journey deep into Ohio Territory to find the warrior they are convinced must be Carleton.

Captured by White Eagle’s hunting party, they discover to their dismay that their arrival forces the simmering conflict between him and the vengeful shaman into the open. And Elizabeth’s presence confronts White Eagle with a wrenching dilemma: to remain with the Shawnee who have become his kindred and marry Blue Sky—or to return with Elizabeth to white society and again take up the reins of revolution. His decision results in an unexpected demand by the Shawnee council that will change Andrews’s life forever, even as it leads to a violent—and fatal—confrontation between White Eagle and his nemesis.

Following a desperate journey back, they rejoin Washington at the Continentals’ encampment across the Delaware River from Trenton. And with Christmas fast approaching, unseen forces again draw the two armies toward a fateful collision.
