Daughter of Liberty
The American Patriot Series, Book 1
By J. M. Hochstetler

Historical Fiction

As the first blood of the Revolution is spilled, a beautiful rebel spy and a jaded British officer fight their own private battles of faith—and the love that threatens to lead them to disaster.

It is Eastertide, April 1775, and in Boston, circumstances are escalating toward a fateful confrontation between the British Regulars and the Sons of Liberty. Caught in the rift between Whig and Tory, Elizabeth Howard is torn between her love for her prominent parents, who have strong ties with the British, and her secret opposition—as the infamous courier Oriole—to England.

Elizabeth must learn when the Regulars plan to seize a critical store of munitions hoarded by the patriots. But she hasn’t counted on the arrival of Jonathan Carleton, an officer with the Seventeenth Light Dragoons. To Elizabeth’s dismay, the attraction between them is immediate, powerful—and fought on both sides in a war of wits and words. While Carleton quickly wins General Thomas Gage’s confidence and the assignment to ferret out Oriole, Elizabeth can no longer deny that he is her most dangerous foe—and the possessor of her heart.

As the first blood is spilled at Lexington and Concord, Carleton fights his own private battle of faith. And the headstrong Elizabeth must learn to follow God’s leading as her dangerous role thrusts her ever closer to the carnage of Bunker Hill.

The American Patriot Series, Book 2

Historical Fiction

Caught between two worlds at war, he could lose everything—his country, his faith, and the woman who holds his heart captive.

Brigadier General Jonathan Carleton has pledged his allegiance to General George Washington. But his heart belongs to fiery Elizabeth Howard, the beautiful daughter of Loyalists who deftly moves among British officers by day and slips across the countryside by night to give their secrets to the Sons of Liberty.

When Washington takes command of the American forces besieging Boston, he orders Carleton to undertake a perilous journey deep into Indian territory to
negotiate with the tribes for their support against the British. Meanwhile, Elizabeth stays behind to continue her work as a spy.

While she gains further entrée into Loyalist circles and access to the intelligence Washington desperately needs, Carleton disappears, captured by the Indians. Every effort to discover his fate leads to a dead end.

After desperate months as the slave of the Seneca, Carleton is rescued by a band of Shawnee, who take him even farther west into Ohio Territory. Adopted by the sachem Black Hawk, he is named White Eagle. Rising to the position of the Shawnee’s war chief, he is drawn unwillingly into a bitter war against the white settlers who threaten to overrun Shawnee lands.

The British evacuate Boston, and Washington sends Elizabeth and her aunt to New York CityElizabeth despairs of ever learning Carleton’s fate. But while events rush toward another fateful confrontation between the two armies, the frontier explodes into flame. And the name of White Eagle begins to spread beyond the borders of Ohio Territory.
